When FDR was elected president in 1932, he seemed determined to help America get back on their feet. During his first 100 days in office, he introduced many policies like the New Deal. FDR's New Deal was a plan to get people working again, with make work projects. Point of this was just to get people working for the sake of working. Because of that, interstate highways and the Hoover Dam are examples of what was made. Along with the New Deal, the different Alphabet Agencies involved the US government to help the USA get out of the depression. In the end the Alphabet Agencies and the New Deal did slowly but surely made a difference. America was able to recover from the Depression.
I think that one the main reasons for the great depression was because of the overproduction of crops. The overproduction led to the prices of what famers were growing, to decrease. The demand was low, while there was plenty of supply. At the time the president, who was republican, didn't feel the need to help the farmers because according to him "Farmers have always been poor." Since the president did nothing, the situation got worse and became the first sign of the Depression on the way.
In class it felt great gaining so much money with the stocks I had. I was ready to get more stocks to make more money. However, when the stocks crashed, I was not prepared. I wanted to get rid of my stocks as fast as I could, but no one obviously didn't want more stocks. So in the end, I ended up being at least $40,000 in debt. I was not able to pay back my loan because I borrowed too much money from the bank in the first place.
In the 1920s, people were coming home from the war and the economy was booming. This lead to people having jobs and them having money. Because of this people wanted to spend. This led to selling cars and watching silent movies at the movie palace. People also got into listening to the radio and dancing in dance halls. They even had dance marathons. A part from cars, planes were also popular. People had leisure time so they could do what they wanted. Although there were some good things happening in the 1920s, there were also other things that occurred. Republican presidents at the time were set on isolating the USA from all the other countries and prohibition also began. Because of the prohibition, mobs and gangs began to form; one of the most famous being Al Capone and his gang.
Cinderella Man was filmed in 2005 and directed by Ron Howard. Its about a struggling heavyweight Irish - American boxer, James Braddock (played by Russell Crowe) during the Great Depression in the 1930s. In the movie, Braddock seemed like a boxer that was doing pretty good, however he had to step down for a while due to breaking his hand. Because of his injury, he couldn't box, leading him and his family to live to what seemed to be a basement - type of apartment. Braddock was barely making ends meet. Luckily after he was recovering from his injury, his manager was able to get him back into the ring. Eventually after climbing up the ranks once again and being able to defeat Max Baer, James Braddock became the heavyweight champion of the world. I enjoyed this movie a lot. Even at the end of the movie, I was cheering on Braddock when he was against Max. I'm not into boxing, but overall it was good.
