Chinese Civil War, 1946-1949

• Mao and the CCP liberated much of northen China from the Japanese by 1945
• Chiang was supported by the US
• The US wanted to form a coalition between the two groups (George Marshall)
• Mao led a peasant army- People's Liberation Army (PLA)

• Chiang and the Nationalists lost and fled to the Island of Formosa (Taiwan)

Summary

Mao and his army liberated much of northern China from the Japanese. Even though Chiang was supported by the States he still fled to Taiwan because he was overpowered by Mao. The Civil war went through from 1947-49, and on october 1st Mao formed the People's republic of China.
