Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)

  • The testing of larger and larger weapons made this a major issue in the 1960s
  • Partial Test Pan Treaty resulted after Cuban Missile Crisis and fear of MAD
  • Became major focus for Richard Nixon as part of his detente policy

The consistent test of bombs and nuclear weapons caused many confrontations during the Cold War.  Subsequently of the Cuban Missile crisis, there was a treaty put in place, the Partial Test Band, focusing on the limitation of nuclear weapons. It became Richard Nixon's made focus due to his detente policy.
